WON £1,800 IN G.A.A. LOTTO

Congratulations to Ted Quinn, Boherbui who was the lucky winner of the £1,800 jackpot in the Ballaghaderreen G.A.A. lotto draw which was held in the Hatch Lounge, The Square. The lucky numbers drawn were; 5, 15 and 26 and the promoter's prize of £180 went to Aldo Morelli, The Square. Congratulations to the following who won £10 each; Theresa Durkin, Kilcolman, Aine Murren, Dalton Tee, Tim Moriarty Snr., c/o Creatons, Barry Conway, Casticrea Road, Manreen Foley, Kilcolman, John Horan, Main Street, Gerard Drury, c/o Durkin's, Fr Dermot Burns, Straide, Mary Colleran, Doogra and Paul Jordan, Dalton Tce. The lotto continues on Sunday night next in Regan's, Carracastle. Tickets are on sale at the usual outlets and from club promoter's.

 

MAYO G.A.A. CONVENTION

Gerry Clarke, Ballaghaderreen was returned for the second year in a row as President of the Mayo G.A.A. County Board at the County G.A.A. Convention in Ballyhaunis. Club delegates in attendance at the meeting were; Jim Fleming and Michael Hopkins.

 

BANK OF IRELAND COLOURING COMPETITION

A colouring competition sponsored by the Bank of Ireland, Ballaghaderreen was held and the following were winners. In the under 12 section; Laura Duffy, Kilmovee, Maureen McMahon, Lisacul and Bernie Sweency, Edmonstown. In the under 7 section, Christine Kavanagh, Lisacul and Olivia Sharkey, Monasteraden were winners. The prizes were presented at the Bank of Ireland and a selection of entries are now being exhibited at the Bank.

 

UNDER AGE MEDAL PRESENTATION

The presentation of medals to under age players from Ballaghaderreen G.A.A. club took place on Tuesday night last in Durkin's. The M.C. for the occasion was Willie the Shoe McNeeley and the night was a great success. It was attended by parents, player, team trainers and officials of Ballaghderreen G.A.A. club. The under 12 and under 13 medals were presented by Vincent Walsh Secretary of the East Mayo G.A.A. Board while the under 15 and under 16 medals were presented by John O'Mahony, the manager of the Galway All Ireland winning team. It was an extremely successful year at under age level. The under 12s won the County League and the under 13s were runners up in the County final. The under 15 team reached the County semi-final and the under 16s reached the County final. Matt Regan, team trainer spoke on behalf of the under 15 and 16 teams. He thanked the players and their parents for the level of commitment shown by them and the hard work that they had put in during the year. He also congratulated them on their success. Frank Kelly spoke on behalf of the under 12 and under 13 teams and said that they had achieved a great deal in 1998. He hoped they would keep up the good work and looked forward to a very successful year in 1999. The Chairman of Ballaghaderreen G.A.A. club, Joe Dillon said he was very pleased to see such success at under age level. It augured well for the future of the club and was a measure of the healthy state of the club at the present time. Willie the Shoe was a very popular M.C. and went down well with the large crowd in attendance at the event. Well done to all the teams on the success they achieved in 1998 and to their parents, team trainers and members of Ballaghaderreen G.A.A. club.

 

FR JENNINGS HONOURED

A function organised by the Community Games Committee was held in Durkin's on Tuesday last for Fr Martin Jennings who was transferred from St Nathy's College to Curry. Eileen Fannon, handball coach and treasurer of Ballaghaderreen Community Games presented Fr Martin with a specially designed mirror on behalf of the Committee. Fr Martin was President of the community games in the town for a number of years and was also very involved with community games handball in the area. At the function, the Chairman, Brian Tansey thanked Fr Martin for his commitment and dedication and wished him well in his new Parish. The Community Games Committee would like to congratulate Joseph McCann and Desmond Keegan on winning the world under 15 and under 17 titles in America over the Christmas period.

 

AGM OF BALLAGHADERREEN GAA CLUB

The AGM of the Ballaghaderreen GAA Club was held recently. The following officers were elected: Patron, Bishop Flynn; President, Jim Flemming; Vice President, Michael Hopkins; Vice Chairman, Micheal Frain; Secretary, Gerry Clarke; Treasurer, John Kilgannon; Assistant Treasurer, Michael Hopkins; P.R.O. John O’Mahony; Oifig na Gaeilge, Christy McCann; Insurance Officer, Dermot Neilan; Delegates to the East Mayo Board, Michael Hopkins and Pat Coen, County Board dele-gate, Jim Fleming. At the meeting the club looked back on a very suc-cessful year particularly at underage level with all the teams doing well. Club Chairman Joe Dillon congratulated the club on its success and said that the senior team were unfortunately beaten early on in the League. He congratulated Dessie Keegan and Joseph McCann on winning the American Championships and all the other players who won All Ireland Medals for the second year in succes-sion. Finally, he thanked the sponsors including Bank of Ireland, A.I.B., lmelda Towey and Durkin’s, Ballaghader-reen. He also paid tribute to the late Mattie Towey and Tom-mie O’Hara, who died dur-ing the year. Both were lifelong members and loyal servants of the G.A.A. He extended sympathy to both their families on their bereavements. The treasurer also made a report at the meeting and reported that the financial position of the club was healthy thanks to the lotto. He thanked all who sup-ported the lotto last year and urged everyone to give Their support this year again. He said that the lotto had helped fund a number of important developments including underage sport which was so important to the club.

 

WEDDNG BELLS

A very pretty wedding took place in St James’ Church, Carracastle on Sun-day last when Kelley Regan, daughter of Terry and Kath-leen Regan, Barroe, Carra-castle wed Adrian Lennon, son of Tony and Kathleen Lennon, Hackfield, Charlestown. The Chief bridesmaid was Lindsey Regan, sister of the bride and bridesmaid was Elizabeth Southern, cousin of the bride. The best man was Liam Lennon, brother of the groom and the groomsman was Michael Keane, friend of the groom. The celebrant was Canon Gerard Walsh, Carracastle and the happy couple are enjoying their honeymoon in Orlando. Their families and friends wish them every happiness in the future.
