PIONEER COMPETITION ‘98/’99

On Sunday 29th November the annual Achonry Readoiri Competition was held in Loftus Hall Ballymote. Many centres and schools took part and as usual St. Nathy's College was well represented with talent rising in all competitions. In the U-18's musical Solo Donal Hernon (L.C.A.) faced stiff competition with a group of 10 to beat, but he rose to the occasion and took home gold. In the over 18's musical solo, Collete Gaffney (L.C. student) followed the same victorious footsteps to the stage and received a well deserved win. In the group singing , St. Nathy’s looked to be a winner with Angela Gordon, Edel Hunt, Siobhan Cassidy, Deirdre Gordon, Emma McDonnell and Edwina Rushe. Sadly, however, they missed out on getting to the next stage. In solo singing Edwina Rushe faced an equally unlucky plight, giving a great performance only to be beaten by a younger family member with gold coming home to Avril Rushe. In the musical competition Colette Gaffney on flute, Fr. McDonagh on flute and Donal Hernon on fiddle but once again were unlucky in not getting to the next stage. Orlagh Sharkey gave a shining performance in the junior recitation and got through to the next stage along, with Donal, Avril and Colette which was held in Roundford last weekend. They competed with stiff competition from the Tuam/Elphin Diocese. Colette Caffney and Avril Rushe won on the night giving them a place in the Connacht final in January.

ST. NATHY'S CAROL SERVICE SUCCESS

On Tuesday 15th December last, students from St. Nathy's College displayed a magnificent performance of carols in St. Nathy's Cathedral. This performance was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The students would like to thank Ms. Egan and Ms. Kielty for their dedication. Also Ms. Fitzpatrick for the organising of the candles and Fr. McDonagh for his supportive role and not forgetting Mrs. Norfield who played the piano on the night. £370 was raised for St. Vincent De Paul from the sale of the programmes.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

On Tuesday last December 14th, LCAl students from St. Nathy's College appealed to students and staff to contribute to the S.V.D.P. collection. As usual there was a great response. Students generously donated food items and toys. Ten Christmas Hampers were collected, along with £370 for this worthy cause, with this money coming from sales of the carol service programmes. We would like to thank students for their generosity.

DUBLIN SOCCER STAR MOVES TO MAYO

It was Amanda Coleman's first season into soccer, she was scouted at a Dublin League Cup final and from there on her life changed for the better and she got onto the Irish Ladies U-17 for the first time. It was an enormous achievement for her as it was her first season playing soccer. She has currently nine caps for Ireland at U-16, U-17, and U-18 level. Last Easter '98 for the first time ever Ireland won the U-16 tournament v Scotland and Wales and Amanda scored the winning goal against Scotland to give Ireland the victory. Amanda's next stage of her international career is to make it on to the Irish International Girls European Championships, last month. It all began in Birmingham, when they played Fahero Islands whom the Irish girls defeated 2-0. Then they played England and lost 5-0 due to injuries and they played Holland. Though they were leading 1 at halftime some injury problems meant they couldn't sustain this lead and they lost 3-1. Amanda hopes that her success will continue and hopes that she'll make it to the final stage of International level. She knows it's a great honour and achievement to be where she is and hopes this success will continue.
