COMMUNITY GAMES COMMITTEE SCOOP NATIONAL TITLE
The hard work, commitment and dedication of the Community Games Committee paid off on Saturday last when they once again captured the National Area Involvement Award. The award is presented annually to the area whom the national panel of judges deem to have the best organisational and administrative skills and whose children participate in the largest number of disciplines. Ten committee members attended the annual presentation awards dinner on Saturday last December 5th. This was held in Tracey's Hotel, Enniscorthy as it is the bicentennial of the Wexford Rising. The Committee were accompanied by Maura McCormack, County Secretary.
The winners from each County were presented with a silver tray. Brian Tansey (Chairman) accepted this on behalf of the Committee. The provincial winners were then announced and there was much excitement at the Ballaghaderreen table when they were selected as the Connacht winners. Martina Mulhall, (national P.R.O.) presented Mary Colleran with the Perpetual Cup, a cheque for £150 and a silver tray. The overall winner for best club in Ireland was then announced and Ballaghaderreen were once again the undisputed winners with a total of 358 points. A jubilant Ballaghaderreen committee accepted a cheque for £200, a Waterford crystal bowl and a perpetual cup from the Chairman of the Wexford Credit Union. Committee members who attended the function were Brian Tansey (Chairman), Tom Flannery (Vice-Chairman), Mary Colleran (Secretary), Regina Finn (P.R.O.), Eileen Fannon and Freda Waldron (Treasurers), Mary Crowe and Tom Griffin. This was a marvellous achievement for a small town and could not have been achieved without the dedication of every committee member.
JOE WINS HALL OF FAME AWARD
Congratulations to Joe Dillon, Chairman of Ballaghaderreen G.A.A. club who was presented with the Hall of Fame award for long service and dedication to the club at the club's annual function which was held on Friday night last. The night was a huge success and a very enjoyable occasion. Joe played with the Ballaghaderreen club at under 14, 16, minor and senior level. He played on the Mayo minor team in 1969 and 1970 on the minor team and enjoyed good success at this level. His playing career finished in the mid 80s and he went on to club administration. He has served in a number of positions in the club including his present post of Chairman. The presentation of crystal was made by Jim Fleming Chairman of the Hall Fame, Committee. Also present at the function was Joe's wife, Shillelagh. Joe said he was delighted to receive the award and it had come as a great surprise to him. He congratulated all involved with the club on a very successful year. The Young Player of the Year Award was shared jointly between; Michael Solar and Thomas Naught from the under 16 team. The team did very well last year and reached the County final and both played an important role in this success.
The guest of honour for the big night was John O'Mahony, manager of the Galway All Ireland winning team and a lifelong member of Ballaghaderreen G.A.A. club. He congratulated everyone on their achievements during the year. He said it was a very successful year for the club and congratulated the under age teams including the under 12s who won the County League, and the under 13 and under 16 team who reached their County finals. A presentation was also made on the night to John Coppinger who retired from the club after many years of service. John is a keen supporter of club and county. In 'addition, a presentation was made to Fr Martin Jennings who transferred from St Nathy's College to Curry during the year. He put a lot of effort and hard work into the G.A.A. club and will be missed in Ballaghaderreen. The was a great crowd in attendance at the annual function which was held in Durkin's and it was a most enjoyable night. Music was by jimmy Towey and his band.
BALLACH N.S. TEAM DRAW WITH CHARLESTOWN
Ballaghaderreen drew 2-4 to 1-7 with Charlestown in the National Schools League. It was an exciting game and a close contest throughout and a draw was the fairest result on the run of play. On the team were; Peter Sharkey, Connor Conway, Aisling Farrell, Damien Regan, Pierce Hanley, Kieran Kilcullen, Barry Morrisroe, David Kilcullen, Gavin Conway, Peter Kelly, Alan Towey, Scan Fleming, Gary Matthews, Connor Gilligan, John O'Connor and Brian Feeney. They played Aughamore last Sunday and were beaten in that game. This was the final game of the season.
