ST. NATHY’S DO THE DOUBLE
  • P.C.C. Falcarragh………………45
  • St. Nathy’s……………..………..52

After making the long journey to Falcarragh, the St. Nathy girls made an impressive start. St. Nathy’s started with a starting five of Sharon O’Connor, Emer Tansey, Maeve Cawley, Michelle Kelly and Catriona Colleran. In the early stages, both teams traded baskets but St. Nathy’s gradually began to pull away with some great scores from Sharon O’Connor, Catriona Colleran and Maeve Cawley. With the introduction of Amanda O’Halloran, Angela Gordon and Edel Colleran, all contributed greatly to the seven point lead St. Nathy’s held at the interval.

After the break, St. Nathy’s continued to play with great enthusiasm and determination despite the long journey. Michelle Kelly started for the second half with superb shooting from outside, hitting four unanswered baskets, giving an indication that it just might be St. Nathy’s day. The girls seemed to cope with whatever Falcarragh threw at them, despite the deficit being cut to four in the closing minutes. St. Nathy’s held out with great offensive and defensive plays from Sharon O’Connor, Emer Tansey, Amanda O’Halloran, Michelle Kelly, Edel Colleran, Antoinette Regan, Angela Towey, Elizabeth Mulligan, Deirdre Gordon and Olivia O’Connor. St. Nathy’s meet Foxrock, Co. Dublin, in the next round, at home, in St. Nathy’s complex.

The first round of the boys’ Bank of Ireland Schools’ Cup saw St. Nathy’s pitted against Cnoc Mhuire Granard. It was also attend by Mrs. Anne McGreal, representing the Bank of Ireland, sponsors for the competition. Granard opened the scoring with a basket from their Under-16 international, Shane Campbell, but St. Nathy’s quickly replayed with a fast break, culminating in a fine score from the Nathy’s captain, Paul Freeman. Trading basket for basket, the deadlock was broken by a super three pointer from Gary McDermott. St. Nathy’s continued to stretch the lead with some great defensive and the offensive scores coming from martin Farrell, Joe McCann, Paul Freeman and a three-pointer each from Gary and Sean McDermott. The younger players, when introduced, gave a good account for themselves. St. Nathy’s ran out worthy winners with a score of 66-50. The M.V.P. award, chosen by the referees, was presented by Mrs. Anne McGreal, Bank of Ireland, to Paul Freeman. Y2K MILLENNIUM APPEAL GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

St. Nathy’s College Millennium Appeal continues to go from strength to strength. The school choose as its Millennium Project the renovation of the College Oratory and Prayer Room. To date many generous donations have already been made to this appeal. As a result, a lot of work has been undertaken and completed. However, a considerable amount of work remains to be initiated. Any additional donations / pledges would be much appreciated. Some of the work already completed can be seen. Stained Glass 1: This is a photograph of the main window of the College Oratory. Previously it had plain glass. This is now replaced with a stained glass image. The glass represents the Book of Genesis narrative "creation from chaos" with the college crest in the centre. It is the work of local craftsman Eugene Harrington, Frenchpark. The cost of this window was covered by a single donation. Stained Glass 2: This image represents three of the twelve smaller windows in the prayer room. All windows had stained glass put in over the past number of months. Again, the work was done by local craftsman Eugene Harrington. StainedGlass 3: We see here finer details of one of the stained glass windows in the prayer room. Station of the Cross: One of the fourteen Stations of the Cross in the prayer room. They are replicas of originals done by English Benedictine sisters of Turvey Abbey. The stations are noted for their imaginative use of primary colours. Prayer Room 2 & Prayer Room 3: Photographs of the totally refurbished prayer room.

ST. NATHY’S PIP CARRICK TO CLAIM SEMI-FINAL PLACE

  • ST. NATHY’S……………….0-7
  • CARRICK…………………...0-6

St. Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen, qualified for the semi-final of the Connacht Colleges senior B football championship as well as a preliminary round of the A championship, following their narrow win over Carrick-on-Shannon Community School at Elphin last week. It was a very exciting contest right through with never more than two points between the sides. Sean Mangan and Michael Solan gave the winners the advantage with points in the first five minutes, but Carrick soon rallied with S. Sharkey, Stuart Roddy and Canney increasing their influence to leave the sides on 0-4 each at half-time. With both sets of defences on top the second half was a ding-dong affair with Carrick edging into a one point lead with ten minutes to go. However, St. Nathy’s held their composure and points from Andrew Moran and John Mitchell saw the Ballaghaderreen college through. St. Nathy’s: Derek Barrett, John Carty, Joseph McCann, Keith Johnston, Eamon Towey, Stephen Drake, Keith Mahon, Andrew Moran (0-1), David McNulty, Derek Moran, Michael Solan (0-1), Kenneth Duffy (0-1), Pat O’Gara, John Mitchell (0-3), Sean Mangan (0-1).
