They won the girls' titles in '96 and '97, the boys mini sevens in '97 and the County Championship N.S. boys in 1998. This year the girls did very well overall. Before taking on Attymass, they had already beaten the Neale by 3-1 0 to 0-7. The Neale would be one of the top teams in Mayo. NATHY'S IN B FINAL St Joseph's, Galway, defeated the first years from St Nathy's by 8-6 to 6-15 in the Connacht Colleges B final which was played in Tuam. The game had everyone on the edges of their seats and it even went into extra time. St Nathy's played with great heart and determination but St Joseph's won by a goal in the end of a close and very tough contest for both teams. It was a heartbreaking defeat for St Nathy's who almost snatched victory at the outset when they were leading by a point before St Joseph's held them to a draw in the final second of normal time. The game opened with both teams baffling hard but Ballaghaderreen went into an early lead with goals from Berry Kelly and Joe Dillon. St Joseph's came back into the game soon afterwards and took advantage of some loose marking to notch up some early goals. The forwards on both sides played a blinder in the first half and for St Nathy's Joseph Dillon and Berry Kelly, in particular worked very well together and David Loftus at midfield also gave a fine performance. In the second half, the St Nathy's defenders really tightened up their marking and began to really get into the game. Conrad Tierney did very well and Berry Maguire who replaced Gary Mangan in the second half also made an impact. Patrick Flaming had a great game at corner back after the interval. Points from Joseph Dillon and another goal from Barry Kelly, really put Ballaghaderreen into the picture and they were looking very good at that stage. However, it was anyone's game and a point from St Joseph's in injury time saw the game end in a draw. It went into extra time and everyone was on the edge of their seats at that stage as it was anyone's game. The first ten minutes of extra time In the second half, St Joseph's really got into the game and looked home and dry after getting two goals. However, St Nathy's were not beaten yet and the fought on with great head and courage. A great goal by Joseph Dillon was followed by a point from Berry Kelly and this brought Ballaghaderreen within a goal on the opposition with only a minute or two left. The St Nathy's goalie picked up an injury at that stage and Gary Mangan came on to replace him. Declan Davey also came on for Robert Hunt. There was more excitement when Kevin Cunniffe got a great ball and laid it to Joseph Dillon who looked goal bound but the ball went narrowly wide. St Nathy's were very unlucky not the win and were bitterly disappointed. On the St Nathy's team was; Aidan Durkin, Patrick Flaming, Andrew Morris, Gary Mangan, Enda Duffy, Conrad Tierney, Gerry Woods, David Loftus (Capt.), Adrian Hardiman, Kevin O'Connor, Joseph Dillon, Michael Colleran, Robert Hunt, Barry Kelly and Kevin Cunniffe. The trainer was Gerry Carmody. ANGLING CLUB The Ballaghaderreen and District Angling Club held the Marlin Maree Memorial Shield competition on Mao 30. GARDAI TAKE PART IN TORCH RUN Sgt Michael Noone and garda |Martin Coyle represented Ballaghaderreen in the cross border torch run in aid of Special Olympics.
