CELEBRATIONS AS FUNDING SECURED FOR COLLEGE SPORTS COMPLEX
The Department of Education has finally sanctioned the long awaited funding for the St. Nathys College Sports Complex at Ballaghaderreen. There have been ongoing efforts by the College to secure additional funding for sports facilities following the amalgamation of the schools in the town four years ago. The funding comes following a long campaign by College President, Dr Martin Convey as well as staff and the Parent's Council. A relieved and delighted Dr Convey said that the news was the best Easter present that the school could think of receiving. Contributions from the trustee and other sources have already raised £250,000 which has been used to build phase 1 of the structure. The building remained uncompleted and was threatened with closure. Dr Convey was glowing in the tributes he paid to all who had helped bring the funding to the school. He thanked in particular the staff and Parent's Council as well as local politicians. CONNACHT FINAL WIN FOR ST NATHY'S St Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen had a great win over Carsick-on-Shannon in the Connaught Colleges junior football final played in Elphin recently. The final score was 0-8 to 0-7. John OMahony managed the St Nathys team. Nathy's got off the mark early in the game and did very well in the first half. With a strong breeze to face in the second half, the odds seemed to favour Carrick-on-Shannon but St Nathy's battled hard and won out the day in the end. There were some brilliant individual performances during this game but it was the overall team effort from St Nathy's which brought them back the silverware. The final minutes had both sets of supporters on the edges of their seats as the play switched from end to end with near misses and some great scores. Carrick drew level on two occasions but scores by Sean Mangan and the winner by Stephen Drake sent the title back to Ballaghaderreen. St Nathy's team were: Derek Barrett, Martin Fleming, Joseph McCann, Kieran Lynn, Eamonn Towey, Keith Mahon, Keith Johnston, David McNulty, Andrew Moran, John Nolan, Michael Solan, Stephen Drake, Pat OGara, John Mitchell, Sean Mangan. Subs: Martin Hannon, Dermot Dillon, Eamonn Colleran, Tommy Gill and James Kilcullen. See a picture of the winning team here. BALLAGHADERREEN COMMUNITY GAMES HITS THE SPOTLIGHT The spotlight was on the Ballaghaderreen Community Games area on Saturday last when R.T.E. television recorded a promotional video of the activities in the area. The video was shot at St Nathy's College Complex and P.E. Hall. The video which will be available next September will be used for promotional purposes for the new millennium. Its aim is to promote the achievements of the Ballaghaderreen area in capturing the national involvement award for two years in succession. It also aims to encourage more parents, trainers and young co-ordinators to get involved. It demonstrates some of the sporting and cultural activities of community games to areas who have not yet affiliated. Filming commenced at noon and continued until 3.30 p.m. The crew, committee and co-ordinators then broke for lunch in Durkins, which was kindly, sponsored by North Connacht Farmers Co-op. Approx. 250 children participated in the filming of the video in the following sporting and cultural activities: variety, set dancing, gymnastics, choir, badminton, art, chess, draughts, adult and junior quiz, handwriting, indoor soccer, handball and basketball. Unfortunately, due to the adverse weather conditions over the past week, it was not possible to film any outdoor sports. Apologies to the children involved. The Committee thanked Fr. Martin Convey for the use of the St Nathy's facilities, the young trainees and co-ordinators, all the children who took part and anyone who helped to make things run smoothly on the day. RIPPLE OF THE REUNION If you wish to meet many of your old friends who attended the Ballagh Galla Reunion last July please join us for a pre-millennium sing-a-long in Durkin's at 8 p.m. on Friday September 10th 1999. It will be the last time this century that we'll all be together to raise our voices in celebration of life. Try to be there.
